The process through which water is applied to plants through controlled amounts is referred as irrigation. To ensure proper handling and less wastage of water, water is availed to the plants in intervals. Areas receiving less amounts of rainfall are the main users of irrigation. Irrigation is core in maintaining the countryside view and structure.
Under agricultural purposes, irrigation is used to reduce growth of weed. The goal of irrigation in many countries is to ensure food security through continuous crop production. Countries that receive less rainfall or are located in drought prone locations have been the main users of irrigation. Improvement in technology under the irrigation has made the practice of irrigation to rise throughout the years. Through the efficient technology, countries are using their available resources that is the water bodies to supply water to the dry parts of the country.
There are various ways and types of irrigation depending on the method of application of water to the crops. The amount of water supplied to plants is dependent on the water consumption needs of the plant. The water consumption level varies in terms in plants since some plants may entirely need constant supply of water for growth. Surface irrigation is one form of irrigation and it is regarded as one of the earliest and oldest mode of irrigation. This type of irrigation involves use of furrows and through this structure water flows throughout the cultivated land. Flooding may result especially when the soil has received enough water. Countries with sufficient and large water bodies mainly use the surface irrigation.
Other types of irrigation include the micro irrigation which can also be known as the trickle irrigation. There is the use of pipes and water is distributed in low amounts at a certain pattern. This is basically a type of drip irrigation and may also involve using other structures such as sprinklers and sprays.
